Overview
The HP StorageWorks Ultrium 460 Tape Drive is the second generation of HP’s Ultrium tape drive family, delivering a capacity of 400 GB * on a single HP Ultrium cartridge (C7972A). Reinforcing HP’s leadership position in tape, it builds on the success of the Ultrium 230 and Ultrium 215 providing unprecedented levels of performance, capacity and reliability, setting new standards in the superdrive tape market. The Ultrium 460 is the ideal choice for modern data centers where the backup window is shrinking, backing up 400 GB in less than two hours.
* assuming 2:1 compression ratio

Customer benefits include:

  • High capacity storage – typically 400 GB on a single cartridge (2:1 compression)
  • Fast performance – allows backup of 108.0 GB/hour (native)/216.0 GB/hour (2:1 compression)
  • Investment protection – This is the second generation of a four generation roadmap for Ultrium technology.
  • Very high reliability of both drive and media

Key Features
  • 200 GB (native), 400 GB (2:1)
  • 30 MB/s (native), 60 MB/s (2:1)
  • Internal and external configurations
  • Universal implementation into ProLiant servers from the new HP
  • Adaptive Tape Speed dynamically matches the transfer rates of slower hosts (from 10 MB/s upwards), which increases performance, reduces mechanical wear on the drive and extends tape life
  • Active Head Cleaning – provides an automated cleaning solution, increasing the head life and reducing the need for periodic cleaning
  • Supported with VERITAS Backup Exec 8.6, Computer Associates BrightStor ARCserve 2000 and HP OpenView Storage Data Protector 5.0
  • Qualified on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and NT
  • Lowest media cost of any ‘superdrive’ tape technology.

Product Highlights
Ultrium Generation 2 Tape Technology
Ultrium 2 tape drive technology uses a linear format of 512 tracks, writing eight tracks simultaneously. The data is written in a serpentine pattern; the tape reverses direction after each set of eight tracks is written.
Ultrium formats are open standards. This means that data written on any HP StorageWorks Ultrium 460 Tape Drive for ProLiants can be interchanged directly with Ultrium 2 tape drives from other vendors.

Backwards Compatibility
Ultrium 460 tape drives are fully backwards compatible with all Ultrium Generation 1 products from all licensed manufacturers, and can both read and write Ultrium 1 tapes.

High Reliability
HP's Ultrium tape technology uses a "best of breed" technology approach, taking the best features from other tape technologies and combining them into a single "superdrive" without the need for design compromises. Ultrium 2 builds on the strengths and success of Ultrium 1 to deliver even better resilience than before. The Ultrium 460 tape drive for ProLiant has a mean time between failures (MTBF) rating of 250,000 hours at a 100 percent duty cycle, making it a truly enterprise class tape drive.

Compression
LTO-DC is an enhanced version of Advanced Lossless Data Compression (ALDC) hardware compression. Compression is automatically turned "off" if the compressed data would cause an overall expansion in data size, hence optimizing the available capacity on the media. The system is used in both Ultrium 1 and Ultrium 2 products

Compatibility Testing
HP StorageWorks Ultrium 460 Tape Drive for ProLiant is fully supported and compatible with ProLiant servers and host bus adapters. The tape drive is thoroughly tested with leading software and operating systems, including VERITAS Backup Exec 8.6, CA ARCserve 2000, HP OpenView Storage Data Protector 5.0 and Microsoft Windows NT and 2000.

HP Ultrium Storage Media
HP’s test program for HP Ultrium media is probably the most thorough and comprehensive in the industry. HP cartridges must satisfy an exhaustive battery of additional tests that relate directly to real life situations, where real data and real businesses are at stake. Over 1 million test hours on media and drives per year ensure that HP cartridges will always offer maximum reliability even in the most extreme conditions.

Management
HP Ultrium tape products are supported, by HP's Library and Tape Tools (LTT) version 2.9 onwards. This tool is intended to help in the installation and maintenance of HP tape drives and devices, including:
  • Diagnostic tools for tape drive and tape automation devices, designed to simplify troubleshooting
  • Multiple options for retrieving firmware information and updating it

Instructions and download of LTT v2.9 are available at: http://www.hp.com/country/us/eng/software_drivers.htm (search for Ultrium 230 or Ultrium 460)
